Nuri Bilge Ceylan is a Turkish filmmaker who has been called the “most difficult man in Turkey" and "the most uncompromising master of cinematic austerity". He has created experimental films such as Uzak (which means "far away") that reflect the harsh truths of modern life. Despite his criticisms of society, he has never shied away from using state funding for his movies. In 2008, Uzak was eventually released in theaters and became hugely successful. The film addresses themes such as class segregation and urban poverty in Turkey’s big cities.The success also led to him being named one of the ten best directors on Earth by Newsweek magazine's annual poll on 2007. The film has been selected by the Berlin International Film Festival for its annual competition in 2008. Bilge Ceylan is most celebrated for his most recent film, Son of Saul (2015), which was entered into competition at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and won the award for Best Cinematography in a parallel section at Sundance. The film stars Géza Röhrig as a Jewish man who is forced to burn corpses during World War II. In 2012, he made a short documentary called The Unknown Soldier, about an elderly man named Papi who takes care of his three granddaughters after his wife dies and chronic illness claims their son. The film was screened at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Ceylan's other feature films include Alptekin Kocasarlas, a comedy about a paper merchant in Istanbul, which won the Golden Cultur award in 2004 and Merdan Poyraz, a tragicomic work about a married couple living in Istanbul. In 2008, he released his first feature film Atlas Atlas Ateş’te (Atlas Atlas on Fire), which was nominated for the Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival. His 2012 film, Yeni Hayat (New Life) was nominated for the Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival. His 2014 film, Nine, was selected as the Turkish entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 89th Academy Awards. The film, produced by Cannes Film Festival's competition board won the Cannes Jury Award for Best Screenplay in 2015. Bilge Ceylan’s films are known to be strongly influenced by literature and theater plays.
